A SPECIAL AFTERNOON IN CITY HEIGHTS
We had the chance last week to spend time with the students at Access Youth Academy, and it’s something we’ll be thinking about for a long time.
Access Youth Academy is a local nonprofit here in San Diego that’s helping young people explore what’s possible for their future — and we were invited to share a bit about our journey and what it looks like to build a life in food.
What stayed with us most wasn’t what we shared, but what we received.
The students asked some of the most thoughtful, insightful questions we’ve ever been asked. They were engaged, curious, respectful, and incredibly present. From the moment we stepped on campus, we felt welcomed.

It’s clear that something really special is happening there. The level of structure, coaching, and care behind these students shows up in how they carry themselves, and, as we quickly learned, in how they play squash too. They are no joke!
We learned that the program’s focus on squash is intentional. It helps set these students apart, opens doors, and gives them access to spaces and networks they might not otherwise have. Paired with the academic support and mentorship they’re receiving, it’s a powerful combination, and one that’s clearly working. Jenny and I even got a quick lesson from one of the volunteer coaches and may have found ourselves a new hobby...
A heartfelt thank you to Academic Coach Celeen Gharibian, and to the entire team at Access Youth Academy, for the meaningful work they are doing.
If this resonates with you, we’d encourage you to learn more and consider supporting their work. Organizations like this are making a real difference, one student at a time.
