MANGO LAO 芒果捞
This is one we have been waiting all year to make...patiently, impatiently, joyfully...until the mangoes were finally ripe, fragrant, and delicious enough to meet our standards.
For Jenny, this dessert began as a small act of love. Growing up, she would stop by the neighborhood Chinese tea shop and bring home Mango Lao for her Puo Puo — her grandma. Something cold and sweet. Something bright. Something she knew would bring her joy.
That is one of the things we believe most deeply at IZOLA: food is one of the simplest ways we show people we love them. Our version is inspired by that memory.
In Chinese, Mango Lao 芒果捞 loosely means a mango dessert you scoop and mix as you eat — mango, milk ice, pudding, ice cream, and mango purée, all layered together in one glass.
We start with champagne mangoes, chosen for their silky texture, tenderness, and bright, honey-sweet mango flavor. When they are ripe, they are almost impossibly fragrant — soft, juicy, and golden all the way through. At the bottom of each glass: big chunks of fresh mango — half a mango in every serving.
Then comes the milk ice: sweetened condensed milk and ice chipped into cold, crunchy pieces. It has a crisp, icy texture that melts slowly into the mango as you scoop.
Next, a layer of mango pudding. In the Chinese dessert tradition, “pudding” is firmer and more gently set — closer to flan than American pudding. It adds a smooth, cool layer between the fresh mango and milk ice.
Then, house-made mango ice cream. We had a hard time finding a mango ice cream that tasted as bright and creamy as we wanted, so we made our own with just three simple ingredients: mango purée, heavy cream, and sweetened condensed milk.
And finally, a pour of 100% mango purée over the top. It slips down through the glass, weaving into the ice, pudding, fresh mango, and ice cream — adding one more bright, golden rush of mango to every spoonful.
It is not quite a drink. Not quite a sundae. It is Mango Lao 芒果捞
— fresh mango, mango pudding, mango ice cream, and mango purée layered with sweetened milk ice. Cold, creamy, icy, juicy, full of texture, and meant to be scooped, mixed, and eaten with a spoon.
Mango Lao will be available for walk-ins only, and only while mango season lasts!
